USDT: ERC-20 vs TRC-20

When sending USDT between exchanges and wallets, it is crucial to choose the right network. Sending USDT on the incorrect network can result in lost funds. The key is to match the network that the recipient supports, avoid being misled by address formats, and ensure you have the appropriate fee coin.

Transferring USDT between different platforms usually means choosing between three main networks: ERC-20, TRC-20, and BEP-20.

These refer to the implementation of Tether's USDT on top of three different blockchain networks:

  • ERC-20: Implemented on Ethereum. Transactions are paid for in ETH.
  • TRC-20: Implemented on Tron. Transactions are paid for in TRX. Unlike ERC-20 addresses, TRC-20 addresses start with "T" and use a different 34-character format.
  • BEP-20: Implemented on the BNB Smart Chain (BSC). Transactions are paid in BNB. BEP-20 addresses share the same 0x format as ERC-20, making them hard to distinguish.

Support for USDT networks varies by platform. Most major exchanges and wallets support ERC-20, TRC-20 and BEP-20 USDT.

However, reciprocal support is not guaranteed. Not every exchange supports the same combination of networks for USDT withdrawals and deposits. When transferring between platforms, check carefully.

A single 0x-style address does not indicate if it is ERC-20 or BEP-20. The network must also match. This creates an easy trap: sending USDT-BEP20 to an ERC-20 address, or vice versa.

TRC-20 is often cited as the cheapest and fastest network for USDT transfers, followed by BEP-20. ERC-20 transactions tend to be the most costly and slow to confirm, due to the higher gas fee requirements on Ethereum.

However, relative costs and speeds can change as network congestion and fee markets fluctuate. It's misleading to give fixed numbers, as fee estimates vary daily on any of the networks.

The biggest risk when sending USDT is an incorrect network entry. It can be tempting to assume that an address and network are linked, but a 0x address could be for either ERC-20 or BEP-20 USDT.

Tron USDT uses a visibly different T-style address. But Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain addresses have the same 0x format, so they're easily mixed up. Don't rely on an address alone to confirm the network.

Before making any USDT transfer, be certain of these three things:

  1. Confirm the recipient service supports the network: Check the exact USDT deposit instructions for the exchange or wallet you're sending to.
  2. Have the appropriate fee coin available: ERC-20 USDT needs ETH to pay gas fees. BEP-20 needs BNB, and TRC-20 needs TRX.
  3. Match the network in both the sender and recipient: Only proceed with the withdrawal if the two services both support, and both show the same, USDT network - ERC-20, TRC-20, or BEP-20.

But with the right double-check, even beginners can transfer USDT between chains securely.
